How to Create a Session Template

Learn how to create reusable session templates with custom sections like warmups, exercises, and games.

Intro

Session templates let you design standardised practice blueprints - for example, a “U12 Standard” session - that you can reuse week after week. Instead of building every session from scratch, you define the structure (warmups, drills, games) once and then generate actual sessions from that template with a single click. This saves time and ensures consistency across your club’s training plans.

This guide walks you through the steps a Club Admin takes to define, create, and customise a session template in BallersBook.

Prerequisites

  • A Club Admin account (the admin-club role or equivalent).
  • At least one group defined (e.g., U12) to associate with the template - see How to Create a Group.
  • Optional: Existing drills from the Drill Library to include in the template sections.

Step-by-step

  1. Navigate to the Templates management area.
  1. Click New Template (or the equivalent create button).
  1. In the template creation form, enter a Template Name that clearly identifies the session blueprint. For instance, type U12 Standard or U14 Advanced Conditioning.

  2. Optional: Add a Description to capture the template’s purpose, target age group, or any coaching notes.

  3. Define the Sections of your template. Each section corresponds to a part of the session (e.g., Warmup, Main Drill, Game).

  1. For each section, you can select existing drills from the Drill Library.
  1. Once all sections are configured, review the overall structure and order. Drag or reorder sections as needed.
  1. Click Save to persist the template.
  1. (Optional) To test the template, go to the Session Wizard (/sessions/new) and choose Generate from Template. Select your newly created “U12 Standard” template to see the sections and drills prefilled.

Tips & Pitfalls

  • Keep templates focused on a single age group or skill level. Mixing U12 and U15 content in one template will make it less reusable.
  • Use consistent section names across templates (e.g., always call the warmup “Warmup”) so coaches and parents can quickly understand each session.
  • Drills inside a template are references, not copies. If you edit a drill in the Drill Library, any session generated from the template will reflect the updated drill.
  • ⚠️ Permission check: Only users with the manage_sessions permission can create and edit templates. If the Save button is missing, ask your Club Admin to update your role.

Summary

By creating a session template, you define a repeatable practice structure that your club can use all season. After saving, use the Session Wizard to instantly build a new session from the template, then customise it for a specific date or opponent. Next, consider creating templates for each age group in your club to standardise training across all teams.
