How to Create a Drill Manually
Learn how to create a new drill from scratch by filling in the details manually on the Drill Creator page.
Intro
Creating your own drills gives you full control over the training content your club uses. Instead of relying only on the global library, you can build drills tailored to your team’s age group, skill level, and specific coaching objectives. This guide walks you through the manual drill creation form on the Drill Creator page.
Prerequisites
- A BallersBook account with the Manage Drills permission (typically assigned to coaches and club admins).
- Access to the Drills module from the navigation bar.
- (Optional) A diagram image or drawing data if you want to include a visual. Manual creation allows you to add these later.
Step-by-step
- Click Drills in the main navigation to open the Drill Library.
- Click the New Drill button (located near the top of the page). You are taken to the Drill Creator page at
/drills/new. - Enter a Drill Name - use a clear, descriptive title (e.g., “U10 Passing Ladder”).
- Set the Duration in minutes (e.g.,
15). This helps when building sessions later. - Choose a Difficulty level from the dropdown: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced.
- Select one or more Age Groups that apply. You can pick multiple (e.g., U8, U10, U12).
- Pick a Drill Type (e.g., Passing, Shooting, Defending). This is used for filtering in the library.
- In the Description field, write the coaching points, setup instructions, and any key coaching cues. Be as detailed as needed - this text will be visible when anyone views the drill details.
- Choose the Scope for the drill:
- Club: The drill will only appear for your club’s users.
- Global: The drill becomes available to all clubs on the platform (requires super-admin or special permissions; for most users, stick to Club).
- (Optional) Upload a Drill Image or attach a Diagram from the Draw Tool. If you skip this, the drill will show with a placeholder image.
- Click Save to finalize the drill. You are redirected back to the Drill Library, where your new drill appears.
Tips & Pitfalls
- If you want to base a new drill on an existing one, use the Copy Drill action from the drill details modal. This pre-fills the form with the original drill’s data and adds “(Copy)” to the name. You can then tweak it before saving.
- Always fill in the Description field - it’s the most helpful part for coaches who run the drill later.
- You can edit a drill later by clicking its card and selecting Edit from the modal. Changes apply immediately.
- The Scope setting cannot be changed after saving. If you are unsure, start with Club - you can always share a club drill with others by copying it to global (requires appropriate permissions).
- If you do not see the New Drill button, verify that your account has the Manage Drills permission. Contact your club admin if needed.
Summary
Manually creating a drill on BallersBook is straightforward: navigate to the Drill Library, click New Drill, and fill in the required fields (name, duration, difficulty, age groups, type, description, scope). Save the drill to make it available to your club. Next, you can add the drill to a session plan or share it directly with your coaching staff.
