How to Delete a Drill
Learn how to permanently remove a drill from your club's library and understand the permission rules that control who can delete drills.
Intro
Drills can accumulate over a season, and keeping your library organized means removing outdated or duplicate entries. Deleting a drill is a permanent action, so BallersBook restricts it to authorized roles only. This guide walks you through the deletion process and explains what to do if you do not have the required permissions.
Prerequisites
- A logged-in account with an active session role that includes
manage_drillspermission (typically Coach, Club Admin, or Super Admin). - At least one drill in your club’s library or in the global library (club admins can also delete global drills if allowed by their club settings).
- The drill you want to delete must not be part of any active session plan (if it is, remove it from the session first).
Step-by-step
- Navigate to the Drill Library by clicking Drills in the main navigation bar.
- Use the Search bar or the Filters (Difficulty, Age Group, Drill Type) to locate the drill you want to delete.
- Click the View Details button on the drill card (or on the drill row if you are using list view). A modal will open with the drill’s full information.
- Inside the modal, find the action buttons at the bottom. Click Delete. A confirmation dialog will appear.
- Read the confirmation message carefully. This action cannot be undone. Confirm by clicking Yes, Delete (or the equivalent button in the dialog).
⚠️ Warning: Deleted drills are permanently removed from the database. If you need to keep a record, consider archiving the drill (if available) or exporting it as a PDF before deletion.
Understanding Deletion Permissions
BallersBook enforces multiple checks before allowing a drill to be deleted:
- Creator-based ownership: The user who originally created the drill can delete it.
- Club Admin: Any user with the
adminrole (ormanage_drillspermission) within the same club can delete drills owned by that club. - Super Admin: Users with the
super-adminrole can delete any drill in the system, including global drills.
If you do not meet the permission requirements, clicking Delete will either be hidden or display an error message. In that case, proceed to the tips below.
Tips & Pitfalls
- If the Delete button is grayed out or missing, you likely lack the required permission. Contact a club admin or super admin to request deletion.
- Drills that are referenced in existing session plans cannot be deleted until they are removed from those sessions. Check the Sessions tab in the drill details modal to see where the drill is used.
- Deleting a drill does not affect any sessions that already included it; the session will retain a copy of the drill data (embedded in the session document). However, the link between the session and the original drill will be broken.
- Consider using the Copy Drill action before deletion if you want to keep a modified version.
Summary
You can delete a drill from the Drill Library by opening its details modal and clicking Delete. This action is final and restricted to the drill’s creator, club admins, and super admins. If you encounter a permission error, ask a club admin or super admin to perform the deletion. After deletion, review your library to see if any drills need to be reorganized or re-added.
