How to Duplicate a Drill

Intro

Duplicating a drill saves you time when you want to create a variation of an existing exercise without starting from scratch. BallersBook’s Copy Drill feature copies all metadata - name, duration, difficulty, age groups, type, description, diagram data, and image - and preloads them into the Drill Creator form. You can then tweak the copy and save it as a new drill under your club.

This guide walks authenticated users with the manage_drills permission through the duplication process.

Prerequisites

• An authenticated BallersBook account (not a guest/anonymous user).
• A role that includes the manage_drills permission (e.g., Coach, Club Admin). If you are unsure of your permissions, ask your club administrator.
• An existing drill in the Drill Library that you want to copy. (The drill can be either a Global drill or one owned by your club.)

Step-by-step

1. Navigate to the Drill Library (/library). Use the search and filter options at the top to locate the drill you want to duplicate.

2. Click View Details on the drill card. A modal opens with a solid white background displaying the drill’s image, coaching points, tags, and action buttons.

3. In the modal, click Copy Drill.

💡 Tip: If you are a guest (not logged in), clicking Copy Drill will prompt you to sign up instead.

4. You are automatically redirected to the Drill Creator page (/drills/new) with the form prefilled. Specifically, the following fields are copied:

• Drill Name - appended with (Copy) (e.g., “4v4 Possession (Copy)”)
• Duration
• Difficulty
• Age Groups
• Drill Type
• Description
• Diagram Data (the tactical drawing is preserved)
• Image URL

5. Review and modify any fields as needed. For example, you might update the name, adjust the difficulty, or change the diagram.

6. When ready, click Save to store the new drill in your club’s database. The original drill remains unchanged.

Tips & Pitfalls

• Permission check: If you do not see the Copy Drill button, verify that your current role includes the manage_drills permission. Switch your active role using the Role Switcher in the Navbar if you have multiple roles assigned.
• Naming convention: The automatically appended (Copy) helps you avoid duplicate drill names. Rename the drill clearly before saving to keep your library organized.
• Global drills: You can copy any Global drill visible in the library. After copying, the new drill becomes part of your club’s private collection and can be edited or shared freely.
• Diagram preservation: The original diagram data is copied exactly. If you want to make tactical changes, use the Draw Tool on the Drill Creator page after the copy is loaded.
• Saving limitations: The Save button will only work if you remain on the /drills/new page and have the required permission. Do not navigate away before saving or you will lose the prefilled data.
